Active Subscriptions Movement Chart
This page describes Charts v3.
This chart is also available in our legacy Charts v2. See Charts v2 and v3 differences.
The Active Subscriptions Movement chart measures the change in unique paid subscriptions over a period. Active Subscriptions Movement can be thought of as a breakdown of what caused the change in the Active Subscriptions count between two periods.

How to use Active Subscriptions Movement in your business
This movement chart, like others in RevenueCat, should be used to answer the “why” behind your Active Subscription trend. For example, to understand what’s driving an Active Subscriptions increase or decrease, you might:
- Segment Active Subscriptions by Store
- See if a specific store is exhibiting the change most significantly
- Then filter Active Subscriptions Movement by that store to see if the change is driven primarily by New Actives or Churned Actives
Calculation
For each period we count:
- New Actives: Total increase in active subscriptions caused by customers paying for a subscription for the first time in that period.
- Resubscription Actives: Total increase in active subscriptions caused by customers resubscribing in that period who had previously churned from a paid subscription.
- Churned Actives: Total decrease in active subscriptions caused by paid subscriptions expiring in that period. Any subscriptions that had lost access due to a billing issue (ie. they had no grace period or the grace period had lapsed) and later recover, as well as subscriptions resuming after a pause are counted as negative churn in the period in which they recover.
The movement recorded in the chart for a given period equals New Actives + Resubscription Actives - Churned Actives.
FAQs
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can Churned Actives be negative for a period? | Yes, if there were more billing recoveries, other access restorations, or subscriptions resuming after a pause than there were paid-access losses, then churn for that period would be negative. This means that even without adding any new actives, your active subscriber base would’ve grown in this period. |
| Is a paid subscription that has been cancelled still considered active? | Yes, as long as the cancelled paid subscription has not yet expired, it is considered active. |
| At what point is a paid subscription considered expired? | A paid subscription without a grace period is considered expired once its next renewal date has passed without a successful renewal. If a grace period is offered, the end of that grace period is considered the paid subscription's expiration date. |
